West Virginia Pizza Bake

Not much cooking going on today. We have family coming to visit for the weekend, so I've got lots of preparation to do. It should be a great weekend. The kids will get to hang with their cousins all weekend. They live about 7 hours away, so the visits are few and far between.

Anyway, our local news station is doing this "Flavor of West Virginia" series, where they choose viewers' recipes and even make some of them on-air. Sleek and I watched the one last week, and it was just painful. So, of course when I noticed a new one on the website I had to watch it right away. It's a Pizza Bake. You just simply won't believe this. (You have to click the "Watch Story Video" link in the low-middle of the screen. You have to watch this. Please, please, please!)

I wonder if Ms. Tracey Neville of Belington, WV knows how to cook anything that isn't from a box or a jar?? Seriously, I hope you don't know this person and that I'm not offending you. Now, I'm in no way perfect, and I don't make homemade food from scratch every night, but would someone really feed this crap to their family??

Which recipe are you going to submit DM? You've got quite a few good ones here.

Hey, I forgot to ask, was that video a joke?? My speakers on my PC are out and Rob has the laptop.....so, I couldn't hear what they were saying, but the video looked like it could easily be a joke.

yeah baby...that's how we roll here in the WV!

excellent post.

first of all, what many people don't know is that this a traditional dish that was started in the southern coal field towns of WV.

for a tropical twist, the pepperoni can be substituted for bacon and/or sausage, plus add coconut or pineable...

if you're planning a fiesta, feel free to substitute the spaghetti sauce for salsa, and top it with a nice gouda cheese...

finally, sprinkle some m&m's on there, wrap in a pita and you're good to go!

OMG........that was so ghetto! I mean who browns ground beef in the oven? And the whole news thing could have been more professional. But if you are looking for a good laugh, this does the trick.

carrie: I'm not offended at all, and hoped that I wouldn't offend anyone by actually posting this. I've lived in WV my whole life, so I think I can poke a little fun. No, I don't know Tracey Neville, and I hope she never invites me to dinner! I was going to actually include in the post that this is not a joke. It's for real.

Ha! Sleek is trying to get me to submit something. I don't know...

OMG, eric! That's hilarious. The last part about the m&ms and pita remind me of this SNL skit.

Hahaha! But seriously, WTF? It was like watching a railroad accident in slow motion - horrible, but you just can't tear your eyes away. There were so many things in this clip that were just wrong. Just... wrong. Like when he chucked all that congealed pasta in there, and it just retained the shape of the bowl... and when he splashed the pasta sauce all over the countertop... and... it's an absolute nightmare for someone who's as OCD in the kitchen as I am.

Hilarious, but sadly not a great advert for Kroger, in the end.

And on another note -- I accidentally hit "reject" instead of "post comment" on your comment re: my art exhibit. Se3e what happens when I blog before caffeine? So... try again? I don't know how to fix it. Blogger has no "undo" for moderation. gah.

Gonna go fix me some pizza bake, now. Maybe I'll have it with some Mountain Dew and pork rinds and watch me some Nascar. Mmmmmm-mmmmm!!!!

Okay, you've got to send in a good recipe.

Susan Chipley said...

TEOH: I know. When the pasta retained the shape of the bowl, and the dude didn't really try to break it up? Yowza!

Okay, okay. Which recipe do you all think I should send in? Orange sesame tofu? The stir-fry I just made?

carrie said...

Probably the stir-fry DM....judging from this video, and the ingredient list in the pizza bake, anything with tofu in the title might scare 'em off.

Susan Chipley said...

carrie: I think you're right. Sleek suggested the same. I'll submit the stir-fry sometime today.

Wow, that video was hilarious, but the food looked nasty. That's REALLY from the Southern Coal fields of WV? Oh wait, weren't they eating that in the Coal Miner's Daughter? That's right....

Susan Chipley said...

badbilly: Dog on the pizza bake all you want, but you better not start doggin' on one of my favorite movies!

Sick sick sick.
The website wouldn't let me watch, but I looked at the recipe. I think I may have heaved a little bit.

Blech.

I rename that monstrosity the Nasty Bake.

There are so many things wrong with that clip, I don't even know where to begin.

Gee... I wonder why MORBID OBESITY is on the rise in North America... and Mama, I know you're PISSED that the clip is called 'Taste of West Virgina.' You need to get your ass on that show and show them how it's done. They're making you look bad!

I also love how he called it a "good Italian dish." Ummm... hate to break it to you Josh, but calling 'Pizza Bake' Italian is like calling that pink sauce you squeeze out of the package onto deep friend egg rolls "authentic Chinese."

Seriously... I have so much more to say. Just so, so, SO gross.

Susan Chipley said...

IF: And WV has one of the highest obesity rates in the nation! I'm submitting a recipe, but it will probably be too difficult for them to make on-air. Oh, well. Oh, and Sleek said the same thing about "good Italian dish". That's so damn funny! As for the "Taste of West Virginia" title. Yeah. Embarrassing.

Charleston Catholic / Clay Center Project said...

It's really sad that people are so reluctant to cook healthy food because it's really not hard to cook things that don't come from a can or a box.

IF -- That comment made me squirm. I come from an Italian family full of good cooks, and they would all beat me severely with wooden spoons and rolling pins if I cooked that way.

Susan Chipley said...

rebecca: I dare you to make the pizza bake and take it to your next family get-together!

Billy- HAHAHA
Isn't this kind of pizza American anyway? I thought real Italian pizza was completely different than the garbage we nosh on. I wonder if they have Domino's in Rome.
DM- I'll make sure I make an XL Pizza Bake for you guys on Thanxgiving.

Susan Chipley said...

getto: I'll make sure to out-do your pizza bake with the XXXL pizza bake that I'm going to bring on Thursday.
